About the Architect
Green, in name and design
By Harold Bubil
Back in 1969, when Terry Green was still cleaning up from the “muddy mess” he encountered at the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, he was becoming interested in the ecology.
Around that time, he was reading about counterculture lifestyle practices in the Whole Earth Catalog. And, while an architecture student at the University of Florida, he wrote his thesis on self-sustainable community design.
So it follows, especially given his surname, that he has built a green house in Sarasota’s Museum District, on Bay Shore Road. Built on speculation, the 3,600-square-foot house recently won several awards for its design.
“‘Green’ is not that new of a thing for me,” said the architect. “I did a solar-passive home in 1980 in North Carolina. I was using radiant barriers in the 1980s in houses in Sarasota. My thesis in college was on an alternative-lifestyle community. We didn’t use the word ‘green’ then, but it was a project that was self-sustainable, with rammed-earth walls and geodesic domes, that kind of thing.”

"We wanted clean lines and a modern sensibility. We got it. We wanted lots of light. We got it. We wanted good flow. We got it. We wanted someone professional with great ideas, but who would also listen to our ideas about how to remodel our 1953 concrete block ranch home in a way that would (1) accommodate a growing family; (2) make the house a better version of itself that still stayed true to itself; (3) incorporated as many "green" features as possible. With Terry, we got it all." Thanks,
Angela & Keith

"Terry Green had the vision and skills it takes to transform a funky older home with odd shaped rooms to a beautiful contemporary home taking full advantage of our view of Sarasota Bay. Thank you Terry and Today’s Builders for an exceptional transformation. Tony & Sharon Kenworthy."

"My name is Susan Smith and I manage a magical condominium property on Longboat Key. I have lived and worked at this spot for over 30 years and what makes it unique is the wonderful architecture. Terry Green was the architect who made our property a reality. His vision, attention to detail, and his creative spirit helped create a property that has endured for over 30 years. As the project manager for the construction of our condominium, I had the pleasure of working with Terry and found him to be extremely easy to deal with. I was very impressed with his knowledge of the Florida environment and the materials necessary to build in this climate. He has a deep appreciation for the beauty of Florida and he is sensitive that the architecture fits into the surroundings in a beautiful and natural way. I have also been lucky enough to work with Terry on some other homes that he has built in the museum area of Sarasota. One in particular was a home that he built in 2009 and it was an award winning green home. This home has won awards and showcased Terry’s skills as a green architect. I have recommended Terry to friends who have used him to do renovation jobs and everyone of them has been more than satisfied with him, not only as a human being, but as a very talented architect. If you are considering hiring an architect, I cannot think of a better choice than Terry Green."

Terry G. Green - Architect - Philosophy of design
I strive to create original high quality designs that honor their unique setting; that represent a sensitivity to environmental sustainability: and that reflect the individual character of the Owner’s lifestyle.
About the architect

As a child growing up in 1950’s Venice, Florida, most of my free time was spent outdoors - either swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and Donna/Roberts Bay or hiking and canoeing or camping around the Myakka River basin. My avid outdoors appreciation continued after college when I moved to “wild west” Idaho, were weekend mountain hiking, rafting, and climbing furthered my connection to the wondrous environment. My senior thesis at the Univ. of Florida consisted of a sustainable community development, totally solar powered and constructed of rammed earthen walls. I have tried to incorporate energy saving design features throughout my 35 year Architectural career, whether residential or commercial buildings. For example, I started using radiant barriers in attics as early as 1980. My penchant for generous overhangs and window shading is a hallmark of my “Florida” style. In the mid nineties I ventured to Costa Rica to design and build a tropical hacienda, completely “off the grid”. This truly “green” house used locally harvested timber from fallen trees, pumped water from a spring, without electricity (gravity function), solar panels for domestic hot water heating, and solar photovoltaic system for a 12 volt electric system.
